Natural beauty.Karkloof Falls at Karkloof Safari Spa

Africa's best kept secret?
This stunning property is situated a mere 20 minute drive
from Pietermaritzburg.
Should you wish to fly in from Johannesburg or Pretoria,
Airlink will get you to Oribi Airport in under an hour.
The drive from the airport is 30 minutes,
and that means that you can be enjoying a Spa treatment
in less than 2 hours of leaving Johannesburg!
Karkloof is also only 100km from Durban ICC.

Nyala ewes look on as visitors head off
to one of Nature's highlights at Karkloof Safari Spa

The walkway to the Falls was all constructed by hand.
Materials had to be carried in as there
was no room for motorised transport.
Every piece had to be cut and secured "in situ"
as manufacturing off site was not an option.
Vegetation clearance was kept to a minimum
and what was trimmed back has regrown.

The walk to the final destination is spectacular,
especially when the river is in full flow.
The walkway meanders alongside before "disappearing"
back into the shade of the foliage.

There are several "mini waterfalls"
along the way.
Guests are encouraged not to see the walk as a race,
but rather as a journey.
To enjoy the time to drink in the beauty
and the splendour of the gorge.

Getting closer...and the sound of the water is almost deafening

Karkloof Falls.
Could this be seen as the biggest outdoor shower on the property?
There is a viewing platform at the base of the falls,
in order for guests to enjoy the spectacle while feeling safe.

Spend time here while you contemplate what treatments
lie in store for you back at the Spa...
OR, just take time out to enjoy what Nature has to offer.

The walk back to your transport is all downhill.
Once again, enjoy the views and the vegetation.

'
Instead of heading straight back to the Lodge,
perhaps you would like to enjoy a picnic meal.
This can be easily arranged and
it is a great way to end off this "adventure".
Karkloof Safari Spa certainly has a variety
of natural beauty to offer the jaded urban visitor.
Take advantage and let Nature form part of your
revitalization package.

Some of the prestigious awards that Karkloof Safari Spa
has garnered over the last few years.
Including the "Best Safari Spa in Africa"!
It does not get any better than that.

Because of the "timeless" nature of Karkloof Safari Spa,
meals, spa treatments and extra curricular activities
can be organized to suit the needs of the guests.
Take the time to wander the property,
savouring what nature has to offer.
"Timeless" is a way of life at Karkloof Safari Spa,
and the staff will help accommodate almost any request.

Something for everyone at Karkloof Safari Spa

Africa's best kept secret?
This stunning property is situated a mere 20 minute drive
from Pietermaritzburg.
Should you wish to fly in from Johannesburg or Pretoria,
Airlink will get you to Oribi Airport in under an hour.
The drive from the airport is 30 minutes,
and that means that you can be enjoying a Spa treatment
in less than 2 hours of leaving Johannesburg!
Karkloof is also only 100km from Durban ICC.

An African Buffalo always looks at you
as if you owe it money...
This one seems to be asking you to come
and spent some at
"Africa's best kept secret"...
Karkloof Safari Spa.
The property is home to a large, pristine, herd
that can often be found close to the reception building.
A wonderful welcome for first time visitors to Africa.

What better way to while away some time.
Sitting watching the river flow past.
The sound as the water cascades over the rocks both soothes and calms
those who are taking time out from a hectic urban schedule.
Dispense with your mobile phones and the TV.
Allow this form the background soundtrack during your stay.

Sit quietly for long enough and you might be lucky enough
to spot a Hamerkop as it comes to seek a meal in the turbulent waters.
This is one of the many species of water-bird that makes Karkloof their home.
If you listen very carefully, you might even hear
the cry of the African Fish Eagle.
Probably the most iconic of all the African bird calls.

There is a reason why the collective noun for Zebra is a dazzle.
Looking like a mini-Serengeti, the plains at Karkloof Safari Spa
are filled with scenes like this.
Due to the lack of predators
(apart from the occasional migratory leopard)
they have no enemies here.
This makes them less skittish
and they will often form a "roadblock"
while cameras click away.

Spend time in the main lodge building
and you will discover a variety of nooks and crannies
that are home to exquisite décor.
Just when you think you have seen it all,
something else will attract your attention.
Allow yourself to be enthralled and enchanted by what is on display

The bar and lounge area in the main lodge is a great meeting place.
Make new friends or enjoy a quiet moment with that someone special.

Who can resist a library filled with REAL books?
Even if guests do not have the time to read,
perusing the titles on the shelves might give
them ideas for reading material when they return home.
A small wine cellar that can be found here
and guests are invited to choose a bottle for either lunch or dinner.

Being here makes me SOOOO tired!
The Hippo is considered one of Africa's most dangerous animals.
At Hippo Dam on the Karkloof property,
they seem relaxed and almost willing to pose for a camera.
During a game drive, ask your ranger to spend some time with
this pod as they frolic in the water.
Even though they are large, they do like to play...
especially the youngsters.

Looking for a memento to take home?
Then look no further.
The shop in the main lodge building stocks a variety of items
to suit all tastes.
The shop is stocked with items made by the locals as well
as caps, shirts and other items of branded clothing.
Well worth a look.

Nice weather for ducks? What better place to spend it.

Africa's best kept secret?

"Great weather for ducks"
Or in this particular case...duck and chicks.
But, if you are not enjoying the weather where you are
then why not book yourself into THIS splendid Spa?

Even if the weather is wet and grey
it will not be of concern to you at all.
You can meditate on raindrops falling off a thatch roof...

Or you can lie in the warm and cosy bed in your Villa
and look out at the rolling hills and magnificent views.

Even with the clouds rolling in, Karkloof Safari Spa
is the epitome of warmth and hospitality.
And, of course, the views from the various Villas are unrivalled.

Sit by the fire...
or as we here in South Africa like to refer to it as "Bush TV".
Can there be any more comforting feeling than getting lost
in the crackle of the wood and the sparks that look like fire-flies?
There are two huge fireplaces in the main lodge building.
They are constructed in such a way as to heat all the public spaces
including the dining room, bar and lounge.

And what better way to stay warm?
Home made soup from Chef Brett and his team.
Feel like soup for breakfast?
It can be arranged!

The main pool at the Spa is heated,
so pop in and take the plunge.
Follow this with a series of signature treatments
to warm your body, mind and soul.

What does Lawrence Mlambo, the Karkloof Safari Spa reservations manager have to say?

Karkloof Safari Spa reservations manager
was guest on the "Travel & Things" radio show.
Listen to what he had to say about what this property has to offer.

The major differential that Karkloof offers is that of timelessness.
If guests are there for one night,
they are able to check in at 08h00 on their arrival day.
And more importantly, they get to check out at 20h00 on departure day!
A total of 36 hours.
Most properties will only allow you to check in at 14h00
and you have to check out by 11h00 or pay for an extra day.
Which would give you only 20 hours.
Do the math, and your choice is easy.

Don't feel like leaving your Villa?
Who would blame you for wanting to "stay in".
With a Nespresso in each Villa,
perhaps George Clooney will drop by to say hello.

Relax in bed, or sit with your feet up enjoying the view...
Each Villa is individually decorated to the highest standard.

And when it comes to food,
you don't even have to go looking for it...
the staff will gladly bring your meal to you.

At most resorts, breakfast is usually served between
6.30 and about 9.30 and perhaps a little later on the weekend.
But that is the time that you usually eat before going to work.
So why should you have to do so while here...
Breakfast is when YOU wish to partake.
There is NO set time for meals
Breakfast, lunch dinner, you can enjoy them at YOUR leisure.

Recently guests had lunch at 6.00pm.
followed by several hours of Spa treatments.

When they finished at the Spa (at around 11.30pm)
they decided to sit down for dinner.

And what a dinner it was.
As the Chef lives on the property, it is easy to cook a late night meal.
Not a usual occurrence, but guest requests of this nature can be accommodated.

There is something about young animals that is so appealing.
Driving from the Karkloof Safari Spa reception
to the main lodge building, guests are often treated to the
sight of a curious baby White Rhino.
Although one of the largest land mammals,
the youngsters are keen to see who has entered "their" territory.

"ONE DAY I WILL BE BIG AND HAVE HUGE TEETH"!
But for now, this young hippo is not moving too far from Mum.

A flock of small Egyptian Geese.
A quiet and calm way to start you sojourn here

Look carefully and you will see two Jacana chick,
easily missed in amongst the floating vegetation.

Lunch can be enjoyed at this bistro alongside the Spa.
Here guests can also enjoy food between treatments.

Meals at lunch time are light options,
Salads and smoothies are on offer.
This is what Chef Brett Hackney has to say about the lunch offerings:

Prep for one of the Spa's signature facials.
Who says facials are for women only?
Men can often be found here, winding down after a busy day.

Stretching is good for you.
A great way to end of a treatment session.
